From: Family Drug Support

Interested in Volunteering for FDS?

Family Drug Support is currently looking for expressions of interest in volunteering on their National Support Line.  FDS operates a 24 hour 7 day a week line for families who are struggling with a family or friends drug use.

The aim of the line is to help reduce the isolation and stigma often associated with alcohol and other drug use. To respect and value the difference between individuals and recognise there is no one ‘right’ way. Volunteers aim to help the family member work out strategies for looking after themselves and the other family members who are impacted. More important is the ability to listen without making judgements. ACCESS TO A LANDLINE PHONE IS IMPERATIVE.

We listen

We empathise

We give people time

Some benefits of volunteering for FDS:

· Learn and apply practical skills

· Enhanced self-awareness

· Opportunity to give back to your community

· Ongoing support and education in your work with FDS

· Telephone shifts from your own home

The training will take place over two days from 9.00am – 5.00pm

Our next training dates are:

Adelaide SA – 30th November & 1st December

Day One – A basic introduction into Alcohol and Other Drugs

Day Two – Stages of change for the family, basic counselling skills i.e. listening skills, types of calls and management of difficult callers.

Additional residential and education days will be held over the year and volunteers will need to attend this ongoing training.

FDS is looking for a commitment of one shift every two-three weeks for a minimum period of 12 months. If you are selected to attend the training it is very important that you are able to fulfil this commitment. FDS has full accreditation with the Australian Council on Healthcare Standards.
